WHAT — Being there without trying to fix it

When someone you care about is hurting, it’s natural to want to make things better.

We reach for reassurance, advice, explanations, silver linings or stories from our own lives because standing beside pain without being able to change it can feel uncomfortable.

But deep pain usually isn’t waiting for the perfect sentence.

Often, what helps most is simpler:

Listen. Acknowledge what’s hard. Let the person tell their story. Stay when there isn’t an answer.

Presence doesn’t mean doing nothing.

It means resisting the urge to move someone away from what they’re feeling before they’re ready.

WHY — People often need to feel heard before they need help moving forward

Ashley Mielke (Episode #29) has spoken about something very simple but important: before people can begin taking steps forward, they often need to feel heard and witnessed in their pain.

That can be surprisingly difficult for supporters.

Pain makes us uncomfortable. We want to reassure:

“It’ll be okay.”

We search for positives:

“At least…”

We share our own experience:

“I know exactly how you feel.”

Or we reach for explanations because understanding something can make it feel less frightening.

Most of those responses come from care.

But several people across the Resilient Souls conversations described a second layer of pain, not caused by what had happened, but by the way others responded to it.

Usually no harm was intended. But feeling minimised, compared, doubted or hurried towards hope can make an already painful season heavier.

Well-meant responses can unintentionally sound like:

Don’t feel this much.Look at the positive.This happened for a reason.Here’s what you should do next.

One of the simplest descriptions of what helped came from Graham Humphris:

“Talk less and be there more.”

That takes pressure off both people.

You don’t need to solve the pain.

You need to help make it safe enough for the person not to hide it.

HOW — Be helpful without needing to have the answer

7.1 Acknowledge before you reassure

When something is genuinely hard, let it be hard before trying to make it better.

You might say:

“This is really hard.”

“I’m so sorry you’re having to carry this.”

“That sounds exhausting.”

“I can understand why today feels like a lot.”

Acknowledgement says:

I’m not frightened by the truth of what you’re telling me.

You can offer encouragement later.

First, let the person know you’ve heard what’s actually happening.

TRY THISWhen someone tells you something hard, start by acknowledging it: “That sounds really difficult.” Let them know you’ve heard them before you move towards reassurance or advice.

7.2 Listen before offering advice

Advice can be useful.

But timing matters.

Before offering solutions, ask yourself whether the person is actually asking you to solve something.

Sometimes it can help to ask:

“Do you want me just to listen, or would it help to think this through together?”

That one question can prevent a lot of unwanted advice.

If they do want your thoughts, offer them gently.

If they don’t, listening isn’t a lesser form of help.

Sometimes listening is the help.

TRY THISBefore offering advice, ask: “Do you want me just to listen, or would it help to think this through together?” Then follow their lead.

7.3 Be careful with “at least”, comparisons and silver linings

“At least you caught it early.”

“At least you still have the children.”

“At least the marriage lasted as long as it did.”

“At least they’re not suffering anymore.”

The sentence may be factually true.

It can still hurt.

“At least” often asks someone to look at what remains before they’ve had room to grieve what’s been lost.

Comparisons can do something similar.

Your own experience may help you understand part of the terrain, but you still don’t know exactly what another person’s experience feels like.

If you share your story, let it create connection rather than competition.

Ashley Mielke (Episode #29) offered a useful way of holding that difference:

“I don’t know what it’s like for you, but I know what it was like for me.”

That leaves room for shared understanding without pretending the experiences are the same.

TRY THISIf you find yourself about to say “at least…” or compare their story with your own, pause. Acknowledge what’s hard for them before trying to find a positive.

7.4 Be careful with explanations, especially spiritual ones

When something terrible happens, people naturally ask why.

Supporters can feel pressure to answer.

For people of faith, that can sometimes lead to explanations about God’s purpose, what He’s teaching, why something was allowed to happen, whether enough faith was shown, or what good might eventually come from it.

Those conversations may have a place.

But the middle of someone’s pain isn’t usually the moment to explain God to them.

Adrian Blenkinsop (Episode #2) described being overwhelmed by well-meaning Christians offering completely different theological explanations and paths forward while his daughter was seriously ill. Rather than providing clarity, it left him carrying even more confusion.

You don’t need to defend God.

You don’t need to explain suffering.

For someone who shares your faith, you might simply pray if they want you to, sit with them, read something meaningful together or say:

“I don’t understand this either. But I’m here.”

Sometimes shared uncertainty is far kinder than borrowed certainty.

TRY THISIf you don’t know why something has happened, don’t feel you have to explain it. If faith is part of the relationship, offer to pray or simply say, “I don’t understand this either. But I’m here.”

7.5 Don’t rush hope

Hope matters.

But hope doesn’t need to be forced into every painful conversation.

Be careful with promises such as:

“Everything will work out.”

“You’ll definitely get through this stronger.”

“Something good will come from it.”

You may deeply hope those things are true.

But you don’t know the future.

Sometimes hope is much smaller:

“You don’t have to work everything out today.”

“We’ll take the next bit as it comes.”

“I’m still here.”

Let hope emerge without using it to silence grief.

And if you genuinely don’t know what to say, honesty is often enough:

“I don’t know what to say. I just didn’t want you to be alone.”

TRY THISWhen you want to offer hope, don’t promise an outcome you can’t know. Stay with what is true now: “You don’t have to work this all out today. I’m here.”

You don’t need the perfect words.

There will be moments when you say something awkward, don’t know what to say or can’t fix what’s hurting. That doesn’t make your presence meaningless.

You can listen, acknowledge what is hard, resist explaining what you don’t understand and stay beside someone without asking them to become less sad, angry, frightened or confused.

Sometimes the most important thing you can offer is simply your presence.
